THIS IS WHO I AM!

This week I will be blogging about my first semester as a college student overall. This blog post will be a self-assessment of me. As a freshman you come in to college with a high school mentality once again your fresh meat. As a freshman you are trying to find your way into the new environment this can be a very overwhelming experience for most. High school was much smaller and you knew almost everyone, oppose to college where the campus is larger and there are thousands of students both young adults and older adults. Maturity is the first step in transitioning into a college freshman, because in college you have more leniencies more time on your hands and this is the danger zone because this is the perfect environment for procrastination to grow on you.
As an incoming coming freshman you are without a doubt going to face difficult situations/ challenges. Some challenges that I have faced so far as a college freshman are; number one procrastination, procrastination has almost become a habit. If I have an important assignment due that involves the computer I weigh my options, “should I start this project now?” or “should I see what new videos are on world star?” I’m going to check the videos out. This is my constant train of thought I tend to choose instant gratification over something I will have to put work into in order to get satisfaction out. Another problem that I tend to face is maturity. A lot of the time I catch myself playing around, I have to remind myself that I am no longer a high school student. As a college student I know I need to start thinking like an adult because if I want to be successful I know that I need to grow up and take things seriously.
If I had to figure out one of my biggest accomplishment it is very hard because I don’t really recall having any. But to come up with one it would have to be being accepted into the freshman leadership program. Being accepted was very rewarding because I had to write an essay and compete against other applicants in order to be accepted. Once accepted however there were things we had to do in order to stay apart of the club and those things included writing essays and attending meetings throughout the month. This club became a little overwhelming since I joined a week late and had to catch up on the work missed. I decided that not participating in this club would be a better option since I was still trying to focus on my academics. In a way this was an accomplishment by taking the initiative to join a club, and also an adult decision to focus on what’s more important. Which the club stressed, academics are first priority before the club.
In my inquiry class we focused a lot on time management, we were taught skills to maximize time and minimize procrastination. Throughout my first semester of college I faced problems with time management; I spent most of my time on my inquiry class and math class. Being a full time student, and part time worker, as well as a commuter was a bit much! Overtime however I learned to use my time a little wiser. For example at the beginning of the semester I would say I never had time, then in my inquiry class we checked the amount of hours that we had free throughout the week.  Remarkably I had 30 hours of free time that I wasn’t using to my benefit. Once I began to use my time wisely I started feeling less stressed. Even though I learned skills to maximize my time, I still sometimes find myself not using my time wisely.  Overall my time management skills have gotten better and I plan to continue to sharpen this skill.
For the upcoming semester I have a set of goals that I want to meet in order to better myself. The goals that I have include, being more responsible, work on maturing, most importantly working hard to get great grades. In order me to responsible I need to get rid of the habit of procrastinating this has caused me much stress in my work and I don’t want to experience this next semester. In order for me to mature I need to start doing this in terms of priority, also I need to get rid of my childish ways. Lastly, in order for me to obtain good grades I need to start doing things on time and correctly.  I also need to pay attention in class and attend class everyday so that I don’t miss vital information. This semester my grades haven’t been what I wanted them to be simply because I expect more out than what I actually am putting in to obtain a good grade.
From here I plan to work my way to great academic standing, I plan to work hard to make myself a great candidate for medical school. I plan to plan wisely, set short term and long term realistic goals so that I don’t overwhelm myself. I plan to use the skills that I was taught in my inquiry class for my future college experience. I want to involve myself more on campus and start to get back in shape to get healthy and feel better about myself.
In conclusion this semester has been full of many experiences that I will not forget. This semester has taught me a lot I have grown as a person. I have been faced with many challenges that I have overcome and some I still have yet to overcome. I have accomplished a few things and plan to continue to accomplish. From here I want to go forward, better myself by maturing, becoming responsible and obtaining great grades. I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me to transition from high school to college.

Campus Safari #Final

This week I will be blogging about my visit to the office of study skills enrichment. What is the study skills enrichment program? Well it’s basically what it sounds like; here they help students form better studying skills. The office provides workshops and campus outreaches. Campus outreach is a workshop designed for clubs. Workshop presentations are given to students, visitors, and faculty. There is no cost for these workshops; the workshops are given on Mondays and Wednesdays. What will you get out of the workshops? You will get help with a variety of things that you face as a student like time management and how to study more effectively. The Study skills enrichment office is located in Engleman room C-016.

Learning community

This week i will blogging about my experience in a learning community. A learning community is the same group of student placed in two classes. In my personal opinion i think that this idea of a learning community is a great one. Being in a learning community as a freshman is great because as a freshman your new to the school and you dont really know anybody. In a learning community you spend alot of time with this group and you get to form friendships and bonds with the people in it.

Another reason why i think that a learning group is great is, in a learning group you all go through the same things. For example, in my learning community we all are freshman and all are working on our time management skills and trying to transition from high school to college. In doing this we learn from each other and ultimately better ourselves.

What i will miss most about the group of people is all the different types of personalities there were. Every one in the group was very different and that was very interesting. I will miss being able to lean on my peers. What i mean by this is be comfortable enough to ask for help from others.

In conclusion to my experience in a learning community i think that being in a learining community is good. You have a support group in a way, if you need help they are more than likely to help you. In a learining group you get to meet new people and form friendships that will probably last very long. In a learning group you learn from each other and ultimately better yourself. This experience was one to remeber and there are things i will miss. Those things include the different types of personalities, and being able to lean on my peers.

Ideal life after college

This week i will be blogging about my ideal life after college. After college i want to be either a doctor or something else in the medical field. I want to help others this is why i am choosin the medical field. After college if i am not in a doctor i was planning on becoming a nurse and if i am i want to start there for some year and go back to school to become a doctor. With college comes tuition and other expenses and i think that going to medical school is a big step and will take some time to finish, so if i become a nurse work for some year get aquianted with the medical field and pay off some of my expenses that i will have would be the best option.
After college i plan to obtain a house, as a child my mother always told me it's better to own oppose to rent. I never live in a house of my own so this is one of the main reasons whay i want to own a home. Once my house is brought i plan to buy other real estate and rent out the house to familys.
In conclusion my ideal life after college would be me either being a doctor or something else in the medical field. Once my career is up and running i plan to purchase a home, and then buy other real estate to rent/sell. After i have my career up and running and i buy a home i plan to start a family.

Once i have my career up and running and have my home and maybe real estate out on the market. I plan to start a family, growing up i watched my mother struggle because she was a single parent. She always told me that i should make sure that i have my career and education together before i think about having children. So i just want to be sure that i have everything situated before i start a family.

Proposal Week 12

This week I will be blogging about my final video project for my inquiry class. In my inquiry class my teacher provided a final video project in which we are to address an issue and find a solution to that problem.  I’m pretty excited to have a little more independence on this project and I really want to get a better grade this time around.  I will try to improve on the mistakes I made in my mid-term video project.
For my final video project I would like to address the problem of smoking on campus. Unlike high school smokers are allowed to smoke at school. This is fine with me because it wouldn’t be fair to restrict an adult from smoking. The problem I have is the places smokers smoke, the campus is decent size and has plenty open space. However smokers tend to not use the spots where there isn’t a lot of people passing by, Smokers are located at Engelmann’s entrance doors and a lot of the time they are at other entrances on campus.
The tables outside of Engelmann have sign above them stating there is no smoking allowed. The sign are disregarded by smokers because they sit there every hour of the day smoking the place up. As a non-smoker the smell of a cigarette is annoying and is worse to my body than the smokers. This problem of smoking in non-smoking places is becoming an annoying and should be enforced by authorities.
In conclusion I like the project and plan to improve from my midterm video. In my proposal I want to address the problem of smoking in non-smoking places, the effects of smoking, and the effects on a non-smoker. I plan to find a solution to fix the problem of smoking in non-smoking areas of the campus.

Living on campus VS. Commuting Week 11

This week I will be talking about living on campus vs. commuting also about the reading that Merrill’s group posted. The reading that Merrill’s group posted was about living on campus vs. commuting, the article provided statistics and information that was new to me. The article states that students on campus are more connected; they have higher GPA’s and are more likely to persist until graduation. You would think that students are more connected in their school, but this isn’t always the case. A lot of students in my classes state they aren’t involved in any clubs and have plenty time on their hands. I think it would be better to say that it’s easier for student living on campus to get involved oppose to a commuter.  Students who live on campus have high GPA’s than commuters make me wonder is it because really because they live on campus or is it other issues that make it harder for commuters in school. For example some people commute for different issues young children they have to take care of, family, or other issues they have to worry about, I don’t think living on campus determines your GPA.
In my opinion of whether living on campus or being a commuter is better I would choose to be live on campus for multiple reasons. Living on campus would allow me to be much closer to the school and if I were to forget something it would be a lot easier for me to go to my dorm room than to travel all the way back home. Living on campus would also allow me to get away from my home and experience college a little more to meet new people. Lastly living on campus I would be more focused since I am around a learning environment almost all the time.
In conclusion I think the reading was good it provided me with new information, and it pertained to me. And in my opinion I think that living on campus is better and this is coming from a commuter.

Readings week 11

This week I will be talking about the readings posted by Tori’s group. The group posted a reading titled left vs. right which side are you on? This reading was very interesting simply because it was something new. The reading taught me a bunch of new things that I didn’t know prior for example; I didn’t know that the left hemisphere of the brain was the rational side and that the right hemisphere was the intuitive side. While reading this article I was wondering which side I was on. I read each section and I couldn’t figure out which side I was on because I possessed traits on each. Once I knew that I could not choose a side I decided to take the test that would help me choose a side.
When taking the test it listed about 15 questions that asked a variety of different things. Proceeding this test it told me that I was on the left side. The reason being I prefer organization, i prefer talking and writing, multiple choice tests, I have good problem solving skills, by logically and sequentially looking at the parts of things. Some examples of these reasons are, I learn by writing things down and asking questions. Open ended questions are harder than a multiple choice test that’s why I prefer a multiple choice. My problem skills I use in math which is the subject I excel in the most, math comes easy to me compared to other subjects.
In conclusion the reading was a good one, simply because it provided new information to me. The reading informed me that I am on the left side. It informed I was on the left side because I solve problems in a linear manner by lining pieces up in logical order in order to draw a conclusion.

Safari #6

This week I will be blogging about my trip to the Southern Connecticut State University’s radio station. I couldn’t find where the radio station exactly was on campus so I visited their website. The radio station is known as WSIN radio 1590AM. On the website I looked high and low for a list of shows, five shows that I came across that seem interesting are Pat in the mid-day, Jon Rivnyak WTF are you listening to, Friday chat with Rachel and Stephen, holding down the rock, and Notorious obscure. Now that it is Sunday the radio station isn’t on air so I can’t rate the show as of now but when the radio is on air I will be sure to send an update. In conclusion the Southern’s radio station seems very interesting and I plan to tune in to see what’s going on, on campus and around the area. Thank you guys for listening in to this blog post

Readings

This week i will be blogging about a reading that Krista's group posted for the class to read. The articles that the group assigned for the class were titled, the type of learning styles, and multiple intelligence theory. The article talked about the three main types of learning style which included Auditory, Visual, and Kinesthetic. Auditory learners are people who like to have things explained oppose to reading about things. Visual learners are people who would rather watch a demonstration or read. Lastly are kinesthetic learners these are people that are hands on they learn by using their hands.
After reading this article I have a better understanding of the learning styles. I came to a conclusion that the type of learner I am is visual, hear, and touch. I would consider myself a visual learner because If I don’t understand a problem I like to see the problem done out. And as someone writes out the problem I can better grasp the idea just by watching step by step. I would also consider myself an auditory learner because I like to listen to music when I am writing or doing math I feel more relaxed. However when I’m reading I don’t like to listen to things I prefer silence because I become distracted. Lastly I would consider myself a kinesthetic learner because I like to use my hands, for example science is a subject where u performs experiments using your hands and I really like science because of this reason. Also if I’m reading something that is difficult and I write notes down I can better understand what is being said.
In conclusion I think the article was very well written, it was very informative it taught me about the three main learning styles which are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic  learners.

Article Readings

This week i will be posting a blog about the reading I did for Rachel's group. The topic that Rachel's group chose was stress in college. The reading was titled The Negative Effects of Stress on Health and Suggestions for De-Stressing. While reading this article I found it somewhat informative. The article talked about things that cause stress, what stress really is, and how to De-stress.

Stress is an internal process that occurs when a person is faced with a demand that he or she feels cannot be met. Failure is not an option, in the sense that failure will lead to consequences so dire as to be unacceptable. Stress is experienced when there is awareness of an imbalance between the rigors of what is in demand and the ability to perform. This is how to article defines stress. I think that this is a good definition in general because I can relate. Preceding the definition that the article gives it then talks about what causes stress. It lists 15 main causes and here they are, headaches,
constipation,
diarrhea,
lack of energy,
increased frequency in asthma and arthritis flare-ups,
 tension,
 stomach, cramping,
 stomach bloating,
 epidermal flare ups or inflammation,
 weight fluctuation,
 heart problems,
 high blood pressure,
irritable bowel syndrome,
 diabetes,
 neck and back pain.

Lastly the article talks about some things that you can do to decrease your stress level. Things like yoga, getting a massage, meditation, and exercise. Yoga helps with metal discipline and focus. Obtaining a massage can help enforce physical relaxation this can then lead to metal relaxation and stress relief. Meditation is a way to focus your mind, meditation helps one to simplify life this takes repetition. Lastly is exercise which can release endorphins, and tension.

In conclusion I think that this article was ok it informed me about ways one can become stressed, how to relieve stress, and what stress is. The article left me with a lot of things I plan to use in everyday life to help me stay stress free.

Safari #16

This week I will be talking about my visit to Career Services.  The Career services center is located in Schwartz Hall room 102. The Career service center is open 8:30am to 4:30pm five days a week Monday through Friday. Now you may be wondering what does Career Services do? To answer this question just read the name C-a-r-e-e-r, S-e-r-v-i-c-e. You guest it they are there to help you find job opportunities. Career Services helps you with things like a resume, a vital part to obtaining a job interview. Career services is a great resource to you finding the job you really enjoy. Career Services has a program called cooperative education through this program people have the opportunity to gain job experience in a field that they choose before even graduating from school. Yea I know it’s amazing! If you have time you should stop by and check it out.

Campus Safari #8

This week I visited the Biology department to complete campus safari #8. I had zero idea where the office was located. So I visited the arts and sciences office where I was helped, they directed me to Jennings hall room 231 A. As I made my way into the office I was side tracked by a fish inside of a fish tank. I walked up to the secretary’s desk and explained the instructions for the campus safari. The lady who was at the desk explained to me that she wasn’t the secretary she was just a substitute. However she provided me the secretary’s name which was Marshal Schultz, her extension number is 6211. She also explained to me the process which was to fill out a blue slip to sign up for an appointment. In about a week there will be a list outside the office informing you of your advisor. Once you receive this information you have to email, or visit advisor during office hours to set up a date to meet. On the day you meet your advisor you will be given your PIN number and will set up courses. Overall the visit informed me a lot about the process of obtaining an advisor.

Mcdonalds and Proffesor Erin-Carr Jordan

Have you ever been hungry and out on the highway or in a different city where you don’t know much places to eat? And you look up and you see two big yellow arcs representing McDonald’s. McDonald’s is a great place to grab a bite to eat for a cheap price. McDonald’s serves 58 million people a day to be more precise they serve 671 customers per second every day. They serve the needs of children and adults, McDonald’s goes as far as having a play scape for the children. This may sound like a great benefit to keep the children occupied for a while. But have you ever questioned the cleanliness of the area where you precious children play? I’m sure you probably said to yourself this McDonald’s needs to clean the plays cape but never took the initiative to test what the kind of things constantly lure in the area.
However one woman recently did Erin Carr-Jordan, a university professor but most importantly a mom to young children. She tested the play scape by swabbing down the area and the things she found were alarming. For example she found, meningitis, gastrointestinal disease and nausea. As alarming as this find is you would think that McDonald’s would take action in order to fix these problems. Instead McDonald’s in her area informed her that she would not be allowed back into the store. Recently the mother took video of the plays cape which went viral and she then appeared on the Anderson show.  Gaining more and more publicity, other mothers have been on her side to take action on this issue. Erin has also found these same types of bacteria in other plays capes like Chuckee Cheese, and Burger king.
In conclusion we all need to look out for our health and protect ourselves from these diseases. Erin has started to take action to form a policy for these restaurant’s to fix these issues. She needs more support in order to make this happen. So be ware and stay safe in these areas and if you see anything suspicious and alarming don’t be afraid to speak up about as Erin did.

Here is a link to her video behind what she is doing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6GOGJUiXVE

And here are your grades!

Mid-terms they are finally here! Wait I thought I was doing better than this. Mid-terms allow me to find where my grade stands. Over the past week mid-terms were issued by all my teachers. Some grades were good some descent and somewhere just horrible. My grades were all over the place from A- to D this is something that I faced in high school that I told myself I wouldn’t allow to happen to myself in college. As of now I am not where I want to be in my academics I expected my grades to be descent from B’s to A’s but I was wrong. A lot of the time I don’t put forth my greatest effort and I expect more than what I should. To see my grades it’s a slap in the face for something I worked so hard to achieve, which is to get into college and do well. I know a lot of what my grades are made of is due to procrastination.
To fix my grades and get them up to where they need to be I need to start completing my homework, and studying more efficiently. A lot of the time I forget about homework or I don’t feel like doing it and it never gets done.  This is something that I need to fix in order to better my grades. Another way of bettering my grades is to study harder, once again I procrastinate to the last minute and my study session isn’t as good as it should be because I limit myself to a little bit of time. Fixing these two problems I will be better off and I will be in great academic standing. Goals that I plan to set for myself from here on out are, stop procrastinating, do more homework, study, and follow through on these three things.
In conclusion my mid-term grades are not what I like, they need to be fixed and maintained. In order for this to happen I need to study, do more homework, follow through and, stop procrastinating. I don’t want to have anymore below average grades.

Concuering Procrastination!

Procrastination:  the act of procrastinating; putting off or delaying or defering an action to a later time
Have you ever put something off to the last day, hour, minute, second, tenth of a second before it is due? If not Great for you, for those of use that wear this day to day this blog concerns you, better yet US! This past week has been full of projects, homework, studying, and most of all PROCRASTINATION the biggest time consumer might I add. When it comes to homework, projects, and studying, there will always be a deadline to finish these tasks. Me myself I like to wait to the very last minute and then when I receive my grade I act so surprised, then I tell myself you know what I’m going to start doing my work on time. Then the next project is posted and, you guessed it I wait until the last minute to finish it. A lot of the time I know I’m procrastinating I tell myself “your procrastinating,” and instead of getting on task I stay of task as much as possible. For example this week I had a math quiz to study for but on this day an interesting show came on. I weighed my options and the interesting show took the cake, probably because all I had to do was sit down and laugh oppose to using my brain to better my grade in math class.
In life I want to become an ophthalmologist and to become this I need to attend medical school. In order to get into medical school I need good grades. In order to get good grades I need persistence and good time management. In order to stay in good time management standing I need to use my time wisely. In order to use my time wisely I need be persistent in achieving this. These two are the core to being able to attend medical school. But I don’t see it as I should I guess I don’t want it bad enough which is contradicting to my heart because I know that I want to help people. Procrastination is something I want to work out of I don’t want to ever feel on the bottom anymore, I want to start staying on top of my work on task. If I do this I know that I will be one step close in getting into medical school and achieving my goal of becoming a doctor.
In conclusion procrastination is bad and is not a trait that no one should posses it only leads to being late, becoming stressed, and feeling depressed. From here on out procrastination is in my past I will no longer lose this battle!

WARNING! Comfort zone

So this past week I had ample opportunity to ask students and staff at southern for interviews for my INQ mid-term video project. Randomly asking someone for an interview is very nerve racking since you don’t know if the person is going to accept or reject the invitation. For me I asked over a dozen different students for interviews more than half were busy or didn’t want to participate. When I received an acceptance I felt good, just not to be rejected. When you are presented with projects like this you have to be very open to people’s opinions and you have to except and admit to yourself that there will be rejection.  Overall my video turned out in my opinion great the people I interviewed were very open and willing to participating. This made me feel comfortable which I think lead to great interviews overall.
Another example this past week where I stepped outside of my comfort zone is when I asked question in my math class. Some might be saying you should have been asking questions from the start, this is true but I guess my pride was hindering me. In class this week I finally asked questions which I wasn’t doing prior to this day in class. Math is a class that was almost always my strongest class I passed pre-calc in -high school with an A. Now I’m taking it and I received a mid-term grade of a D. I tried many things like going to the math tutorial center It helped a little bit. I tried studying myself for hours at a time this always helped but I couldn’t apply concepts, leaving me confused. So I told myself that the next day in math I was going to ask questions. I came in and my teacher asked “Any questions,” the first thought that came into my mind was “Don’t ask that question, it’s a dumb question.” But I forced myself to say I need help with problem 3. When I finally spoke I felt a relief it felt good to just get that off my chest.
In conclusion stepping out of my comfort zone helped me gain interviews and knowledge in a class that I am struggling in. Overall I plan to implement these lessons into my life from here on out, DON’T LET YOUR PRIDE GET IN THE WAY KYRE!

Time is AH-ticking !

Mid-term video UUUGGHH ! was my response when I heard we had to create a video on critical thinking. I knew in my mind that this project would be very time consuming and tedious. In a way I was correct but overall the video project turned out to be fun which makes the time feel not so long and boring. When I look back over the amount of time I spent on this project it would calculate as follows:
·         Brainstorming-                                                                                     3 days
·         Interviewing-                                                                                        4 days
·         Gathering other materials-                                                                2 hours
·         Transferring materials to the computer                                          Still in process
·         Learning to use video software                                                         2 hours
·         Making the video                                                                                 Still in process
·         Editing                                                                                                   Still in process
·         Other                                                                                                    2 hours
Creating a video takes persistence and great time management two traits that I showed when I created my video.  At the beginning of making my video I took very long in deciding what topic I wanted my video to be on. This took me 2 days to figure out my topic preceding this I got started on shooting and editing. I tried to make sure I chipped away at this project day by day so that I wouldn’t have to crunch everything into one day. Ultimately my plan worked very well I spent my time wisely. One thing that I would suggest to myself in order to have a better result is to have started the project earlier. Overall I like the project and it has taught me a lot of new thing that I plan to implement in life from now on.

Trobleshooting?

What’s up fellow Owls this week I will be blogging about my video project and my troubleshooting. So this week I ran in to some trouble with my video as most of you may have. I’ve been pondering which topic I wanted to use and I couldn’t seem to find one. Then suddenly at work my co-worker introduced me to a poem that was very interesting and humorous. I figured that once I got the topic everything would be easy and fall into place, well that didn’t turn out as expected. I ended up second guessing myself and wasn’t sure if the poem was relevant to critical thinking. So I decided to pay our professor a visit, there I read the poem to her and she assured me that the poem was something that definitely is relevant and was a great idea! Preceding this I started my interview process which is going very smoothly. I have two interviews down thus far and just four more to go! I’ve uploaded the video of my first two interviews and hadn’t come across any technical problems nor other issues as far as uploading my video to YouTube. My video is progressing smoothly with just a little bit of bumps along the way.  In conclusion I think that the project is very fun and interesting, Just seeing other people’s opinion and responses.

Capus Safari #2

What's going on people it's me again checking in with campus safari #2, this week im writting about a book that i found in the library. Last week my INQ class visited the library for some insight on the library's resources that are available to every Southern Connecticut student. In the library we had to find a book to help us define critical thinking. The book i found was "Think" by Judith A. Boss, in the book it basically talked about what the credentials are to be considered a good critical thinker. Think also talks about what critical thinking is and what it is used for. Ultimately when i scoured the library for the book it wasnt hard to find since i wasnt looking for Think, I came across it after the book I was really looking for was already checked out.

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking- Is the mental process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to reach an answer or conclusion this is how dictionary difines it.

Is dictionary.com's definition of critical thinking the only definition that describes what critical thinking really is? In my opinion critical thinking most nearly means thinking creatively and intellucualy which isnt much different from the dictionary's definition.

Recently my INQ class took a trip to the library to become more informed about the library's resources that are available to Southern students. Here we had to scour the librarys homepage for different things this is a prime example of critical thinking. We analyzed the site and created an answer that we thought was rational. While in the library we had to look for a book that seemed like a good resource for definig our topic "Critical Thinking" the book that i found was called "Think."

In this book it explains what critical thinking is! it also defines a good thinker by listing characteristics.

The book defines critical thinking as a collection of skills we use every day that are necessary for our full intellectual and personal development. Then it takes the word critical shows that it is derived from kritikos (Greek) which means discernment or the ability to judge/ decision make. Next the book shows how critical thinking and logic go hand in had since they both require good analytical skills. In an everyday situation critical thinking provides us with the tools to identify and resolve issues in our lives, the book provides this example.

What makes a good thinker? is a good thinker someone who thinks long, in depth, or creatively? THINK defines a good thinker as a person who has good analytical skillz, effective communication, reseatch and inquiry skills, flexibility, tolerance for ambiguity, open-minded skepticism, creative problem solving, attention, mindfulness, curiosity, and collaborative learning.

Health Center #3

What's up fellow OWLS! im checking in again with a new post. This week i visited Granoff Health Center, On my visit i tried to answer the question " What are the most common health problems faced by college student ?"  and here is what i found. As a college student we are always on the GO! we are constantly multitasking, eating horribly, and sleeping irregularly and this isn't healthy. Some diseases that college students are most prone to are Insomnia, eating disorders, drug  addiction,  and depression.

Insomina-
As students we are overwhelmed with part time jobs, school work, family, and personal issues on a day to day basis. A lot goes on in one day and if the end of the day isn’t met with the proper amount of sleep that can lead to health problems. Health problems like insomnia, insomnia comes from lack of sleep, or inconsistent sleep patterns. Insomnia can cause student to have trouble falling asleep, staying sleep or trouble with both.
Eating disorders- Eating disorders are becoming more of a trending topic in college students. There are many eating disorders that are present the most common for example are, anorexia, bulimia, obesity, binging and purging. Eating disorders are most commonly found in college students. Appearance, food addiction, or depression can lead to anyone of these disorders.
Drug addiction- College parties are very common and at those parties you can find drugs or alcohol. Drug addiction can come from multiple channels. Peer pressure can lead to a person trying drugs and ultimately becoming addicted to that drug. The most common drugs that are being abused today in most college students are prescription drugs which are dangerous, marijuana, and alcohol. Drug addiction can lead to many health problems, sometimes fatal.

Depression- Many students can feel depressed from school work (anxiety) since the work load is much greater than high school. Depression can also come about through an unhealthy relationship, being away from family, or from an experience in your childhood that was traumatic. Since hormones are constantly fluctuating college students are at a greater risk of becoming depressed.

In conclusion the Granoff Center is a great place to get help or advice on health problems or issues. So stop by to take advantage of the services that they provide.
